When the city of Sandy wanted to design and build a park that would serve the needs of the community, they called in the McNeil Engineering team for our landscape design and civil engineering expertise.
During the project the McNeil team of landscape design specialists were asked to be involved in an interactive process within the community as the concept for the park was under development. Creekside Park, located at 9400 South and Riverside Drive, was designed to be a neighborhood park — so neighborhood input was a critical part of the design.
How did this innovative process work? It all started more than 10 years ago, in 2007, when Sandy city leaders saw the need for the neighborhood park. From the start, they were dedicated to taking community input, and gave the McNeil team the opportunity to ‘design-to-spec’ (so to speak), as residents, neighbors, and city staff all providing valuable comment and feedback to refine the concept.
But even before the design process could begin, McNeil Engineering was called in to aid and support the city in their bid for easements, and to contribute to the bid process to gain grant money awarded through the Natural Resources Conservation Service to fund the project.
Next came a preliminary landscape design process. The McNeil team generated several design concepts, and both residents and city staff were consulted for feedback in all elements.
Ultimately, it was concluded that the park should include a walking trail, shaded seating areas, a playground, climbing wall and drinking fountain enclosed in perimeter fencing. The community also desired a natural environment, and all landscape elements were designed with this in mind.
Additionally, the McNeil landscape design team was tasked at each step of the way with meeting strict budget guidelines for the project. Our team often works to find solutions, resolve any challenges, and find creative ways to meet the design needs of our public, private and nonprofit clients.
As a result, this park was a success with the community, met the stipulations of the city staff and leadership, met all inspection requirements when completed, and continues to have a positive, useful impact on the community of neighbors it serves in Sandy.
We’re proud that residents, families, and communities across the intermountain west can enjoy the landscape design and engineering work we do for public facilities, such as Creekside Park!
